M S Joshi
Murlidhar Sadashiv Joshi was born in 1912 in Nashik, Maharashtra. His gouache and watercolour works express a sense of vitality, combining Indian aesthetics with styles from global art movements. Throughout his career, Joshi endeavoured to assimilate the elements of academic realism with his immediate environment, resulting portrayals of cityscapes and landscapes rich with architectural elements and depth rendered through a subdued yet textured palette. His works are included in several national and international collections of repute.A passionate educator, Joshi was one of the founding members, and later principal of the Model Art Education Society and Institute, established in 1939 in Dadar, Mumbai. He also took an active interest in theatre, directing Marathi dramas for annual shows at the Institute. The artist passed away in 2001.
