N Ramachandran

Nagasamy Ramachandran is a contemporary artist born in 1975. He hails from Paramakudi town, in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, and studied at the Government College of Fine Arts, in 1999, before moving to the Chennai Museum Laboratory in 2005. He has a B.A (Hons) in Glass from Edinburgh College of Art and has completed a course in Photopolymer Etching and Edinburgh Printmakers.

Ramchandran’s mixed-media collages frame quaint street views of Chennai in timeworn traditional frames to create an ambiguously “urban” visual archive. The artist, who lives and works in the city, is well-known for his montages, which tend to convey a sense of inescapable chaos, despite his methodical approach to create works of chiselled accuracy, being rooted in methods of symmetry and mathematical precision. The result is telling, as the effect of his works is like that of contact sheets of photographic negatives, like compiled evidence, laid out for inspection on the tables of a forensic lab. Even so, the artist retains a definite scientific manner in creating his artworks.

Ramchandran has been felicitated by several awards including the Audi Ritz Icon Award, Charles Wallace India trust Award, the National Academy Award for 50th National Exhibition of Art, Lalit Kala Academy, Edinburgh Printmakers Visiting Artist Award, Scotland, Junior Fellowship – Indian Department of Tourism & Culture, Lalit Kala Academy Scholarship for Young Artist, India and Tamil Nadu Ovia Nunkalai Kuzhu award, Chennai. He has hosted solo shows in Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi and participated in several group shows in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Chennai. He has had an international showcase in Dubai/UAE as well.

His exhibits are “@” – 8, a mixed media with electric motor made in 2015 and “@” -11, a mixed media art made in 2015.
