Vilas Shinde
Vilas Shinde was born in Satara, Maharashtra in 1953. He completed his Diploma in Drawing and Painting from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai in 1978. Thereafter he did his Post Diploma in Painting from the M.S. University, Baroda in 1980. He then studied Painting at the Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Beaux - Arts and Print Making in Paris, France. Here he had the opportunity of studying under S.W. Hayter.
Shinde has won a number of awards like the first prize at the 17th Maharashtra State Art Exhibition in 1976 and the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy Exhibition, Ahmedabad in 1980. He also received the French Government Scholarship in 1981-82. He has a number of solo exhibitions to his credit. Prominent among them are the ones at Hall D'accueil Du Centre Albert Chatelet, Paris (1982); LTG Art Gallery, New Delhi (1993); Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (1994) and Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai (1997). He has also held joint exhibitions with Jin Sook a number of times including one at Shin - Shin Art Gallery, Deajon, South Korea in 1987 and another at Prithvi Art Gallery, Mumbai in 1996. Apart from these solo and two-man shows, Shinde has also exhibited at various group exhibitions both in India and abroad. Some of these are at the Indian festival in USA (1986); International Print Making Biennial, Bhopal (1988); 17th International Independent Exhibition of Prints, Kangawa, Japan (1992) and 'The Harmony Show' organised by Reliance Industries Ltd, Mumbai (1996).
Vilas’ work can be found in several important collections like the National Lalit Kala Akademy, New Delhi; Times of India, Mumbai, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi as also in several private collections in India and abroad.
Vilas Shinde lives and works in Mumbai.
